Early ALERT Program
Boise State University is committed to student success and retention. Our students matter to us. To ensure that first-year students have the opportunity to access programs to support their transition to the university, Advising and Academic Enhancement (AAE) is implementing an early alert referral process for faculty who teach first-year students. AAE staff utilize an intensive and comprehensive intervention strategy to teach students academic success skills and encourage behaviors demonstrated by successful Boise State students.
The program is based on a faculty-interaction model including proactive, supportive and accurate referrals and follow up. Faculty who teach first-year students contribute to the University's retention through identifying students who exhibit signs of academic difficulty in the classroom. Early detection by faculty is critical to the retention of our first-year students.
The Early Alert process is as follows:
- Faculty identify students experiencing academic difficulty. Signs include:
- Missing one or more classes within the first two weeks of the semester.
- Low or no engagement in the classroom.
- Isolation from other students - student does not seem to be making appropriate peer connections.
- Disruptive behavior.
- Exhibiting attitude that impacts other student engagement.
- Poor performance, particularly early on in the semester.
- Faculty complete the Early Alert Referral Form. A PDF version is also available for downloading and printing (PDF).
- If the form is completed online, when you click on the "Submit" button, the form will automatically be sent to an email account in AAE. Please be aware that any/all information submitted will/can be discussed with the student.
- AAE notifies the faculty member of receipt and makes contact with the student via email to schedule an individual advising appointment. During that consultation, the staff member addresses academic difficulties the student may be experiencing and strategies to resolve those difficulties. Other campus referrals will be made to appropriate areas: Counseling Services, Student Health Center, Women's Center, Cultural Center, Financial Aid, etc. Referrals may also be made to certain classes: UNIV1O1, Freshman Seminar; UNIV105 Reading and Study Strategies; UNIV106, Library Research; UNIV108, Career and Life Planning; UNIV120, Comprehension of Textbooks and Text Structure; etc.
- AAE (with permission of the student) will follow up with the faculty member and provide information on the referral. Note: Counseling and health information will not be released, based on confidentiality requirements.
