Early ALERT Program FAQ's

Advising Matters Early Alert Program Referral Form FAQ's

Who should be referred?

Students who exhibit signs or behaviors that may lead to academic difficulty should be referred.  These signs or behaviors may include things such as poor early attendance or poor early academic performance.

When should I make a referral?

As the name of this program indicates – EARLY.  The sooner, the better!  The earlier we can identify students who might struggle academically, the earlier we can intervene and provide support.  National research indicates that students who miss class within the first two weeks of the semester are likely to continue into academic difficulty.

How do I make a referral?

You can make the referral through the online form or complete the PDF version and fax it to Advising and Academic Enhancement at 426-4228.

What will happen after I have made a referral?

After receiving the referral Advising and Academic Enhancement will:

  • Contact the student to schedule an appointment
  • During that contact or the first advising appointment, assess the student’s needs
  • As a result of that assessment connect the student with services, informational or additional referrals
  • Contact the faculty member to let her/him know that the student has been connected

Advising and Academic Enhancement may connect students with the following resources:

  • Tutoring and academic skill building
  • Study groups
  • Supplemental Instruction
  • Health, Wellness and Counseling Services
  • Women’s Center
  • Cultural Center

Advising and Academic Enhancement staff may continue to monitor a specific student’s process.

Will I be violating any privacy laws by making a referral?

No.  Advising and Academic Enhancement will treat all referrals in an ethical manner in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines.
